A studio of one’s own

Artist Kavya Mehta on making room for the unexpected.

Portrait of an artist in her studio

Kavya Mehta speaks about the quiet rituals that shape her practice. In her studio, found materials sit beside unfinished work, each one waiting for a new context.

What keeps her returning to the same space each morning? Not certainty, she says, but the possibility of being surprised. The conversation moves from the things we inherit to the things we choose to make anew.

For Mehta, a studio is not a retreat from the world. It is a place to consider how an object can hold memory, and how the act of making can become a way of paying attention.

“The work begins when I allow myself not to know.”
