The patience of colour

Painter Leila Morgan on the layers we leave visible.

Artist working with blue and ochre pigments in a studio

Leila Morgan talks about how a painting changes when it is given time. She describes the small decisions that happen between the first mark and the last, and the traces that remain on the surface.

Colour, in her practice, is a way of listening. Some days she follows a familiar palette; on others, an unexpected shade changes the direction of the whole canvas.

We speak about unfinished work, the pleasure of revision, and why a studio should always leave room for a question.

“A painting should be allowed to change its mind.”
